Behold the Coming "Energy Bill."

Congress is close to passing an energy bill that will require a big spike in motor vehicle fuel economy.

No group of vehicle owners wants better fuel economy more than those who drive SUVs and other light trucksthey already are paying the most at the pump, but for many of them these are the only vehicles that meet their family, work or leisure needs.

SUVOA is on record supporting strong increases in fuel economy and use of alternate fuel sources to reduce the nation's imported ... > more

Greenest States

If you wondered what state is the "greenest", and California was top of mind because of its environmental activism, you'd be wrong. Way wrong.

Forbes Magazine is out with its state rankings and there are some surprises.

Even New Jersey is greener (#7) than the Golden State. Keep that in mind the next time you're on the Jersey Turnpike enjoying the scenic factories along the Rahway/Newark/Hoboken corridor.

And (drum roll) the winner is? Greenest honors ... > more

Let's put the Shutters on Detroit Once and For All

Those "whining" car companies are at it again. Complaining that people should have the right to buy the vehicles they need, and we should not wound our economy by mandating fuel economy improvements that are not realistic or affordable. The nerve!

So, let's close down "Detroit" and let environmentalists build our motor vehicles. They have the answers and will give us no-compromise cars and trucks that get 100 mpg! Just listen to what one of their stellar organizations says: ... > more

Just kidding...sort of.

Late one night last month while Americans still awake were watching Leno or Letterman rather than C-SPAN, the U.S. Senate passed an energy bill that mandates a 40 percent increase in passenger car and light truck fuel economy by 2020.

SUVOA is not a partisan organization. But when a principled man like Congressman John Dingell (D-MI) is attacked publicly with a ridiculous campaign that is misinforming adults and especially children, other people of principle need to stand up in his defense.

I did a radio call in show this week "debating" a city councilman in Massachusetts who introduced legislation to increase local taxes on SUVs to penalize owners who buy them.

In the rush to "do something" to lessen our dependence on foreign oil and cut greenhouse gases, the Senate Commerce Committee's actions may have done more to hurt consumers than solve either of these problems.

The Senate Commerce Committee today approved legislation that would dramatically raise fuel economy standards (called Corporate Average Fuel Economy - CAFE) for passenger cars and trucks, including pickups and SUVs. The legislation for the first time would extend fuel economy ma... > more

Washington Auto Show Visit

A story in today's Washington Post about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit yesterday to the Washington Auto Show provides still another snapshot of the "do as I say, not as I do" hypocrisy in Washington, D.C.

"Ten in Ten" - Snake Oil On Capitol Hill

Many years ago across America folks rushed to the town square when the silver-tongued snake oil salesman arrived selling potions that promised to cure all life's ills.

The worthless tonic and salves flew off the wagon because people wanted to believe and wanted easy cures for their aching backs and gout-stricken toes.

Sadly, some among us are very susceptible to this kind of "free lunch" thinking.

Most Americans probably didn't read former Secretary of Energy James Schlesinger's excellent treatise on "global warming" and the Kyoto Treaty featured in the August 8 issue of The Wall St. Journal.

Would that "The Theology of Global Warming" be must reading for high school and college students, and anyone seeking a rational overview of what has become an irrational public conversation about saving the planet from environmental Lucifers real ... > more

    Defining California's CO2 Regulation

Ask just about any man (or woman) on the street what they think about California's new regulation of carbon dioxide CO2 and they look at you as if you were speaking in long-lost tongues.

In a way, you are. And, the public reaction captures the essence of many modern "environmental" regulations - a splendid deception hawked to the public simplistically as "good for the environment," while cloaked in scientific mumbo jumbo so obtuse that it's... > more

    SUV Retrofit Equipment

SUVOA does not endorse commercial products. But every now and then a technology comes down the pike that merits a special mention. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is an exciting new safety technology that government and insurance industry e... > more

    Great North American RV Rally

RV enthusiasts were out in force last week in Redmond, OR for the Great North American RV Rally, sponsored by Good Sam Club. California C02 Law

The Great North American RV Rally attracted thousands of California RV owners. SUVOA spoke with hundreds about their state's new law that will limit C02 emissions (reminding them that C02 is not a pollutant), forcing vehicle manufacturers to drastically downsize vehicles and installing smaller engines (the law purports not to do this but there is no other way to get there). And Californians will pay several thousand dollars more for such vehicles (Pay more / get less)!... > more
