December 05, 2007 12:57 PM Behold the Coming "Energy Bill." Congress is close to passing an energy bill that will require a big spike in motor vehicle fuel economy. No group of vehicle owners wants better fuel economy more than those who drive SUVs and other light trucksthey already are paying the most at the pump, but for many of them these are the only vehicles that meet their family, work or leisure needs. SUVOA is on record supporting strong increases in fuel economy and use of alternate fuel sources to reduce the nation's imported ... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 13

October 18, 2007 10:26 AM If you wondered what state is the "greenest", and California was top of mind because of its environmental activism, you'd be wrong. Way wrong. Forbes Magazine is out with its state rankings and there are some surprises. Even New Jersey is greener (#7) than the Golden State. Keep that in mind the next time you're on the Jersey Turnpike enjoying the scenic factories along the Rahway/Newark/Hoboken corridor. And (drum roll) the winner is? Greenest honors ... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 8

August 20, 2007 9:57 AM Let's put the Shutters on Detroit Once and For All Those "whining" car companies are at it again. Complaining that people should have the right to buy the vehicles they need, and we should not wound our economy by mandating fuel economy improvements that are not realistic or affordable. The nerve! So, let's close down "Detroit" and let environmentalists build our motor vehicles. They have the answers and will give us no-compromise cars and trucks that get 100 mpg! Just listen to what one of their stellar organizations says: ... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 17

August 03, 2007 11:21 AM SUVs Are No Longer the "Environmental Downfall of the Western World" Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Where's the oxygen mask when you need it most? The Western World's dependence on flush toilets could be its environmental downfall. Toilets that use less water, such as the "squat toilet" in which one squats over a hole in the ground, are prevalent in parts of Asia, Europe and Afri... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 2

July 11, 2007 3:05 PM Remember as a kid winding up that rubber band-driven propeller for your balsa wood airplane? You might be doing the same for your car not long from now! Just kidding...sort of. Late one night last month while Americans still awake were watching Leno or Letterman rather than C-SPAN, the U.S. Senate passed an energy bill that mandates a 40 percent increase in passenger car and light truck fuel economy by 2020. Some might say, Yippee ki yeah. But as they say in the infomer... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 12

July 10, 2007 1:41 PM Disgraceful Attacks on John Dingell SUVOA is not a partisan organization. But when a principled man like Congressman John Dingell (D-MI) is attacked publicly with a ridiculous campaign that is misinforming adults and especially children, other people of principle need to stand up in his defense. He is now being called a "Dingellsaurus," and his detractors are picketing his offices wearing dinosaur costumes. They also are running a deceitful radio ad where a child is being lied to by a parent about Dingell's actions invo... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 1

May 11, 2007 5:41 PM I did a radio call in show this week "debating" a city councilman in Massachusetts who introduced legislation to increase local taxes on SUVs to penalize owners who buy them. If you own an SUV you would be slapped with a big tax for offending one of the high priests of political correctness in that town who believes that SUVs are the root cause of a coming apocalypse when global warming causes the State to slide into the Atlantic Ocean. ... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 20

May 09, 2007 12:00 AM There's no free lunch at this CAFE In the rush to "do something" to lessen our dependence on foreign oil and cut greenhouse gases, the Senate Commerce Committee's actions may have done more to hurt consumers than solve either of these problems. The Senate Commerce Committee today approved legislation that would dramatically raise fuel economy standards (called Corporate Average Fuel Economy - CAFE) for passenger cars and trucks, including pickups and SUVs. The legislation for the first time would extend fuel economy ma... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 2

February 14, 2007 4:19 PM What do you know about AB 1493? Amazingly, most of Jay Leno's "Jaywalking" contestants can't tell him correctly when the War of 1812 was fought! So, it's pretty unlikely that they'd know about one of California's newest laws-Motor Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Law - AB 1493. But it would be interesting to hear the responses. I'd bet not one-not one-would be able to describe it (if they even knew about it) They'd be totally stumped. Yet, this law will cost most of them big bucks ... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 6

November 03, 2006 1:54 PM Perceptions count more than reality. And those who hate SUVs have done a good job creating the perception that SUVs are unsafe. But occasionally the reality empire is able to strike back. And strike it did on October 25 in of all places The New York Times. The Times' newsroom is hardly a bastion of SUV aficionados, but even the The Gray Lady couldn't ignore facts from the respected Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). So here are some of the perception-buster factoid... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 13

October 30, 2006 1:59 PM SUVOA is not a partisan operation-we are interested solely in the VIEWS and VOTES of various politicians, not the political club they belong to. With that in mind, we urge SUV owners to study up on the views and votes of candidates running for office. If vehicle choice matters to you, candidates' views and votes on policies affecting vehicle choice is something you should investigate. But most importantly, as an American, get out and vote. Voter turnout in this country is pa... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President 0 Comments
October 25, 2006 1:20 PM Good thing Santa isn't Hawking SUVs Forbes.com reports that all 50 of the 2007 Nieman Marcus Limited Edition BMW M6 convertibles featured in the retailer's Christmas catalog sold out in a record 1 minute 32 seconds. Imagine that! For 139,000 smackaroos you get special ruby black paint, gold-brown Merino leather and "unusual bonnet lines." Under the hood there's a 500 hp V-10 capable of propelling the car to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Ho, ho, ho. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to sit on Santa's lap, tell him that I... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 2

October 19, 2006 3:39 PM Regulators Need To See America More Often! SUVOA had a nice introductory meeting last week with the new Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). "Nit-suh," as it's known, is responsible for auto safety regulations, seat belt and anti-drunk driving campaigns and fuel economy requirements. It's a small agency with a big assignment that impacts the lives and pocketbooks of millions of Americans. We were very impressed. Administrator Nicole Nason seems to have a good grip on the agency's respo... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President 0 Comments
August 29, 2006 12:04 PM Latest Safety Data: The Silence Is Deafening The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) just released its final report on what happened out on our roads in 2005. You know, the annual information release that in recent years was marketed mostly about just one thing—the safety performance of SUVs. How many news cycles did we endure about SUV rollover crashes and SUVs being too dangerous for teenage daughters to drive? And who doesn't remember the PR campaign that featured a woolly mammoth cartoon SUV ... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 6

August 28, 2006 4:51 PM The actor Colin Farrell was on the Tonight Show last night with Jay Leno. He allowed that he was exhausted having flown 10 hours to get from Europe to L.A. in time to do the show. Poor thing—we all know how crummy it is to fly anymore, what with all the ticketing and security hassles, banned hair gel and the like. But wait. Actors don't go through the same TSA gauntlet and eat small packs of snacks like the rest of us commoners. Nooooooo. Universal Studios provided a pr... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 9

June 27, 2006 5:15 PM "Ten in Ten" - Snake Oil On Capitol Hill Many years ago across America folks rushed to the town square when the silver-tongued snake oil salesman arrived selling potions that promised to cure all life's ills. The worthless tonic and salves flew off the wagon because people wanted to believe and wanted easy cures for their aching backs and gout-stricken toes. Sadly, some among us are very susceptible to this kind of "free lunch" thinking. > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 3

June 01, 2006 11:53 AM Demonstrated Bias Against 'Gas Addicts' What follows verbatim are the first three paragraphs of a New York Times column that ran in today's paper. A column is commentary so you can say pretty much whatever you want. But most columnists state their opinions in less offensive ways to provoke readers to think about issues of our day. Nothing wrong with being provocative, but this one--in my opinion--is over the top. Also note how his writing compares to the AP reporting that he includes in the third paragrap... > more Posted by Barry McCahill, SUVOA President > 12
